A practical exercise that offers a relieving full-body workout that continues to grow in popularity is yoga. In addition to the physical benefits, yoga supports mental and emotional health, enhancing overall well-being. Bryn Carden, active health guru and former Miss Kemah Teen USA, reverts to yoga as a regular practice to stay in shape and develop mindfulness. In this article, she lists the top benefits that yoga gifts to fuel the body, mind, and soul.

Benefit #1: Reduces stress

Stress is unavoidable in life, so learning how to manage stress best is the most proactive approach to dealing with it. Yoga is a valuable tool when looking for avenues to reduce stress. In fact, 86% of Americans said they choose to engage in yoga in hopes of relieving stress. The action of stretching, tightening, and relaxing muscles lower physical and mental feelings of tension, promoting a peaceful environment.

Benefit #2: Releases “feel-good” brain chemicals

Yoga increases oxygenated blood flow to the brain and releases brain chemicals like endorphins and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) that spark good feelings.

Benefit #3: Helps develop a sense of self

Anytime someone commits to taking the time and effort to complete an exercise, it is an act of self-care. Yoga presents the opportunity to practice self-care in cooperation with self-acceptance. The two in sync help cultivate a more nonjudgmental relationship with oneself, ultimately laying down foundation blocks to build self-trust and confidence. A relationship with oneself defined by the statement, “I am worthy,” leads to balanced emotions, healthier choices, better relationships, and more willpower.

One of yoga’s pillars includes focusing on the breath and breathing slowly and deeply with control from start to finish. The science of breathing alongside the movements of yoga alters an individual from the sympathetic nervous system, otherwise known as flight-or-flight, to the parasympathetic nervous system, or rest-and-digest. Calming the nervous system in this way aids in relieving depression and anxiety. Meditation, which plays a part in yoga practice, decreases activity in the limbic system, or the area of the brain responsible for emotions, and assists in dissolving emotional reactivity.

Benefit #5: Leads to a better night’s sleep

Individuals struggling with insomnia can improve their mental state by practicing yoga. One study found this benefit more prominent in older adults as participants over the age of 60 recorded better overall sleep after practicing yoga. Another study on postmenopausal women battling insomnia revealed that yoga reduced insomnia severity.

Benefit #6: Sharpens the brain

The brain continues to benefit in numerous ways from yoga practice, including its sharpness. Yoga allows brain cells to generate new connections, resulting in positive brain structure and function. Learning, memory, awareness, thought, attention, and language become enhanced by yoga practice revamping cognitive skills. MRI scans have also exposed the advanced brains of those who consistently practice yoga, showing a thicker cerebral cortex and hippocampus.

Benefit #7: Sparks other healthy habits

Like other exercises, yoga practice tends to lead to overall healthier choices in areas such as self-care and diets. Deciding to eat healthily will only elevate cognitive function.

It’s no secret that Zac Efron was a teenage heart throb, but in Baywatch he unveiled a whole other level of fitness. Trained by Patrick Murphy, the famous celebrity fitness trained who has coached the likes of numerous Hollywood A-listers. These include Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel and Alexandra Daddario.

Efron’s transformation in Baywatch was phenomenal, and to get that to happen, Murphy had to create workouts that would change overtime, to continue to progressively overload Efron. This was done in order for Efron to never plateau in his muscle gain.

His routine consisted of full body workouts, power and strength training, balance and stability training, lifeguard training, obstacle course training and so much more. Rep schemes, lifting styles and set schemes were all thrown at Efron but changed up continuously on the daily. With an impressive workout ethic, Efron managed to get through this all and become shredded for his role.

Furthermore, Efron followed an eating plan (diet is everything) to go with his fitness routine. He needed a diet that would fuel his body consistently with such hard workouts being completed. In order for this to occur, a highly nutritious diet is required. A few examples from his diet include brown rice meals, quinoa, fresh fruits and vegetables, complex carbs and lean sources of protein. Majority of the time Efron would follow this diet, however he would allow himself 3 cheat meals a month. It is important to have some cheat meals as continuously following a rigorous diet and workout routine can lower your morale without sometimes giving in to allow yourself to enjoy food you crave.  This could be used as a reward system, and is crucial to many people’s fitness success.

Efron got ripped for his role in Baywatch through a very rigorous exercise routine which was constantly being switched up, as well as a dedicated, highly nutritious diet.

But with the busy schedule of a movie star, how does he manage to build then maintain a physique like that?

Always look to progress

Johnson believes in progressive overload, which is to do with continually pushing your body to new heights once workouts get easy. You should be careful as you can injure yourself if you up it too quickly, however this is the way to ensure you progress.

It is important to listen to your body

The way your body responds to things is the only thing you should listen to. If you are trying a new workout, you must see how your body reacts to it. If it reacts well and you get good gains, then continue to follow it. If not, maybe it’s not the workout routine for you. More so, if your body is telling you that there is pain, then usually it is not a good thing. Pushing through joint or muscle pain (not the good kind!) can leave you with injuries that can persist for a long time.

Go hard in the gym

When in the gym, really give everything you’ve got. All your frustrations can be let out in the gym, and giving it your all also ensures that you’ll get a good workout and the most out of it.

Gordon Ramsay and his fitness routine as a celebrity chef

A chef is usually pictured as being overweight, due to the nature of the job. Having to constantly taste food to understand it, can’t be good for your health. But with celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, it doesn’t show at all. This thanks to a fitness routine and healthy diet. Ramsay lost an incredible 50lbs, and he looks better than ever. His routine consists more of endurance training rather than lifting heavy weights, and he routinely trains with cycling when he’s travelling. If he’s not travelling, he makes sure to get his workouts in at his home gym (working out with Will Usher, former army captain and member of the Royal Protection Squad!).

“The more I train, the more normal I am, the more I feel that I’m still unchanged” said Ramsay in regards to his diet and training routine, which he believes keeps him feeling young and healthy.

Moreover, Gordon came out with a new cookbook called “Gordon Ramsay’s Ultimate Food: Mouth-Watering Recipes to Fuel You for Life”, which is full of healthy meals for the fitness enthusiast.

Gordon doesn’t follow a specific diet or have a dietician, but he swears by certain rules for his eating habits. One of these is cutting down on dairy, which he believes makes you feel sluggish. Almond milk is his replacement, which mixes in with a smoothie consisting of berries yoghurt. He also believes in drinking a couple glasses of water before you eat a meal, which he says doesn’t fill you up but it does stop you from eating excessively.

It’s plain to see that Gordon Ramsay is in great shape, and it is evident in his body even at his age of 53. It is important to take care of your health, even if you are a celebrity chef who can create delicious meals at any time.
